The thin front edge is not used for any door, switch or card reader. All connections are located on the right or left, and the back is entirely occupied by the battery. The order in which they are arranged is meaningful: VGA to HDMI on the side of the left. In this way there are no cables to disturb the mouse to the right. Lefties will instead fight a bit with HDMI and USB cables to the left of the notebook.

The card reader and audio jacks are located right in front. In this way a USB mouse only interfere in some cases. The connections have certainly been more comfortable, as in every laptop on the back, but doing so would not be possible to use a removable battery.
The keyboard is very suitable for people who write a lot, assuming you fly over the keys on the basis that fluctuates significantly. The buttons have separate care for people with large hands. We believe the limit is too soft, and the feedback could be stronger. The impression, using the keyboard, is to work with an object carefully designed and high quality.
The thing that sets it apart from the competition is successful layout, with big buttons and clear labeling. The blue function keys to access special functions like screen brightness, volume and WLAN are arranged in the middle of the F keys The power button is also well designed.
The touchpad is positioned in the middle of the palm rest area. To distinguish, Asus has covered the area with small grooves. However, this does not improve usability in court, and the same can be said of the slippery surface and dirtiness.

Of note, for completeness, support for multi-touch pad (Elan Smart-Pad), which recognizes the use of two fingers simultaneously. In this way the user has access to two-finger gesture, for example to control the zoom and make horizontal and vertical scrolling.
AUO-panel screen (AUO102C) failed to convince either concerning the contrary, neither compared to the brightness. The average measured was 183.5 cd/m2.
The maximum brightness of 206 cd/m2 was in the upper left. Considering the high reflection of the screen should have been worth at least 230 cd/m2. As it is easy to use in bright sunlight it is practically impossible. The brightness is not changed during the battery power. The external light sensor on the 15.6-inch model (UX50V) is not available on UL30A.
The horizontal viewing angle is fairly good. We were able to read the text displayed to about 45 °. Only at angles greater the colors begin to reverse, the screen darkens quickly. Looking down from the reading is easy up to 40 °, but the brightness decreases significantly after about 10 °. If more people gather around Asus UL30A, spectators watching from above can not distinguish much. Already at 40 ° colors are changed significantly. The texts are no longer recognizable, and so the colors.

Those who opt for the 13.3-inch version is in search of a compact portable and mobile. The absence of a DVD player on UL30A is accepted as part of the compromise, in this case. What counts is the battery life, and this laptop it offers in abundance.
The purpose of this review will be the Asus UL30A without further comparisons with his older brother, the UX50V. It is the first time that Asus offers our reviewers a dual core processor Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300. This model belongs to the family CULV Intel, released in mid-year.

Are variants of the ultra low voltage processors from Intel, only recently used in the range of portable thin. The novelty is that we have thin and light notebook with battery life of between 5 and 8 hours, below the higher price range. The laptops with Intel CULV are available at affordable prices, between 500 and 800 euro. The same goes for the Asus UL30A, with a very attractive price of 650 €. We will give an overview of the advantages and disadvantages of the notebook and find out if it's worth buying.
Asus has produced a portable 13.3-inch, 1.8 kg the case is robust enough for mobile use expected, but is far from perfect. While the palm rest area is stable, the back of the case can be folded easily. The big drums on the back, moves noticeably when you move the houses.
The surface on the palm, just above the keyboard, as the base is stable and does not bend, even by applying pressure. Even the lid is stiff enough, considering the reduced thickness. Keeping the edge we were able to bend only a few degrees and little pressure to the surface of the eyelid does not distort the immediate TFT. The two screen hinges are set in a rather loose. Despite all the screen is held firmly in any position and does not oscillate when subjected to vibration (such as train or car).

Excellent idea by Asus to use a brushed aluminum surface of the eyelid. The feel and quality, although a bit 'cold. Unfortunately the subtlety creates the impression of being sensitive to impact or pressure. As if small objects in laptop bags, such as a pen or a USB drive, can easily create small, irreparable scratches.
The main criticism that we are moving to homes is still a partial lack of stability, but the work area. The ultra-reflective finish, very attractive initially, soon becomes a collection of fingerprints. This style is also used for the frame from the screen, which may cause annoying reflections. The workspace ultra-glossy clamoring to be cleaned. The brushed aluminum of the eyelid by an impression of strength, but is sensitive to pressure.

The notebook is silent steadily, with 31.2 dB (A) during normal operation. Surfers and occasionally see some pictures from memory cards, hard to perceive the fan noise. When processor and chipset are fully exploited, which is practically only during the stress test, the fans draw attention to a perceptible 37.8 dB (A). But, ultimately, this is a very low value and definitely not annoying.
Consequently, our impression of the ergonomics is good: we rarely have come across a sub-notebook so quiet and park in the thermal emission.

At rest and during use of office, the most common scenarios for UL30A They each of Asus UL30A just become the hottest temperature in our tests (23 ° C). We recorded a maximum of 29.8 ° C in the area above the fan. The bottom heats up more in some areas, with the thermometer reaches 32.8 ° C.
During the benchmarks for processor and graphics card, the Asus UL30A becomes neither hot nor noisy. On the top we measured a maximum of 35.4 ° C after one hour of stress-testing. Fortunately, the dissipation is less in touch pad with 30 ° C. The base has remained low enough to be touched without problems in testing scenarios. In some junctures the thermometer registered a maximum of 38.3 ° C, but the average was just above 32 ° C.
Our benchmark, eg. Futuremark 3DMark06, failed to carry the Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 above 47 ° C. Under conditions of low load the temperature stays about 36 ° C so practically constant, and the fans are silent.
We measured the temperature with CoreTemp 0.99. To try to reach higher values we launched simultaneously Cinebench R10 and test GPU Furmark. This had little effect. The Core 2 Duo SU7300 did not exceed 48 ° C, however, a value that owners of mobile-oriented games can only dream of.
The fans blow warm air through a grid on the back of houses. It is so quiet that even when the laptop is heavily stressed, is hardly distinguishable from the background noise of an office. As for the dissipation, only the area around the processor and the next grilled reach 38 ° C.

The speakers are on the front and produce a sound quality that we would hardly expect from a 13-inch laptop. They are manufactured by Altec Lansing, as indicated by an adhesive. The bass can be produced faithfully from stereo speakers, but the volume is sufficient to fill a small room without suffering any distortion at higher volumes. Describe the sound as metal would not be right, but the mix of high, medium and low is not optimal: we say that the midrange tones are better represented.
The use of external speakers via the 3.5mm jack for headphones can help. We tested this configuration with two active speakers Yamaha YST-M20SDP. The volume can be controlled from the handset, but the low signal introduces a significant noise. The SRS-Sound feature makes sense, especially when using headphones, significantly increasing the body of low and thus the overall quality (although purists will find the bass too fired in this case).

In the case of SU7300 the maximum TDP of 10W. Is a Low TDP, probably attributable to the manufacturing process to 45nm. The chip operates with a 800MHz FSB on the usual Intel GM45. The second-level cache is relatively generous, with 3 MB. In comparison, the model SU4100 CULV-Pentium-Dual has only 2 MB of L2 cache.
Our benchmarks for processors have confirmed that the Core 2 Duo SU7300 provides decent performance, but only when it is used both cores. Compared to the popular Core 2 Duo SU3500 1.4 GHz, the SU7300 can already be considered competitive with a single core. 1654 points in Cinebench (SU7300) in giving single test compared with about 1500 of SU3500.
The slightly faster Core 2 Solo SU3500 (1.4 GHz) has always had problems during testing with Windows Vista and many programs open. This problem is somewhat reduced by the arrival of Windows 7, but a dual core processor is the best choice. We must consider that anti-virus software and other programs often require processor resources, interrupting the current task and causing delays in the system reacts to inputs.

Overall performance was good and running smoothly. Various programs running simultaneously is not a problem for UL30A. The fast DDR3-1066 RAM from 4Gbyte is partly responsible. With Windows 7 64-bit plus it can access the entire allocation of system RAM. Versions of Windows 32-bit access only to a little over 3 GB. An important factor for the operating speed is the hard disk Hitachi 320 GB (model HTS545032B9A), in addition to multi-thread capabilities of Core 2 Duo.
The Intel GMA 4500MHD is built into the chipset GM45 and has no dedicated video memory. Therefore borrows from DDR3 RAM (up to 384MByte). Current games, which severely strained the graphics card, are taboo for UL30A. THE 4500MHD is compatible with DirectX 10, but the benefits are so low that games reach up to 25 frames per second with the details to a minimum. The operating frequency is 475MHz: Asus probably declined to exploit the maximum of 533MHz to limit consumption.
An interesting feature of the GMA 4500 HD, compared for example to the GMA950, is offering support for decoding HD video (AVC/VC2/MPEG2) and therefore unable to ensure smooth playback of video content. This hardware features must be supported by the editor / video player using.
The HDD Hitachi (HTS545032B9A), with a total capacity of 320 Gbyte, working with a rotation speed of 5400rpm. HDTune recorded an average speed of transfer of 63.5 MB / s during the sequential reading, a value which places this model in the medium-high. He is currently the only cut available, for those who want more, you can replace the hard drive via a door under the bed. SATA II provided the model is very quiet and almost imperceptible in operation.

The GTX 260M high frequencies of the Alienware m15x exceeds both with the help of the Core i7 with 11,080 points. The GeForce GTX 260M at low frequencies with 4762 points in 3DMark Vantage is a disadvantage against the 5500 Radeon HD 4850 and GeForce 5685 GTX 260M points at high frequencies.
The values of both 320 GB hard drives were almost identical. According HDTune, the average transfer speed is excellent with 72.2 to 75.7 MB / s. Access times on average from 17.2 to 18.2 ms as a maximum data transfer rate of 76.8 to 78.2 MB / s could be better.

Information on the hard disk Asus G72GX
The CPU and RAM have been 6.9 points, the graphics card and hard drive 6.7 points 5.9 points in the index of performance of Windows 7 (maximum score 7.9). In sum benefits are good.
Those who use external devices such as sound cards must take account of latency on Windows. Should be too high, we might encounter problems such as distortion of the sound output. The latencies G72GX mainly remain within the green land below 500μs tool for monitoring latencies DPC Latency Checker, but occasionally latencies reach higher values up to over 2000μs.
We start with the most demanding game benchmarks in our path: Crysis. The Asus G72GX already suffers resolution of 1024 x 768 with high details and did not go sufficiently smoothly with 30.7 fps in the benchmarks for the CPU and the GPU in 31.0. Both the MSI GT725 (Core 2 Duo P9500, Radeon HD 4850) with 41.0 fps in the test generic CPU and 44.8 fps for the GPU is the Alienware m15x (Core i7 QM-720, GeForce GTX 260M high-frequency) with 39.2 fps in the tests for the CPU and 41.9 fps at those for the GPU were significantly faster. The performance of G72GX even collapses to 24.7 fps in benchmarks for CPU and 24.5 fps at those for the GPU to the resolution of 1600 x 900.

With stunning graphics, Crysis Year 1404 may represent the real-time strategy. Therefore we must not underestimate the required hardware details very high and 4x AF. The G72GX with its Core 2 Duo Q9000 and its GeForce GTX 260Msi involves more than good to the resolution of 1280 x 1024, reaching a full 44 fps on the screen. Year is still enough fluid even at a resolution of 1600 x 900 with 37.8 fps. The Radeon HD 4850 works at this speed to 1280 x 1024.
The GeForce GTX 260M works very well with high detail and 4x AA filter to both resolutions of 1280 x 1024 (67.4 fps) and 1600 x 900 (50.6 fps) with FEAR 2. But the Radeon HD 4850 performs well even better with 86.1 fps average resolution of 1280 x 1024.

No matter how we tilted the screen half the screen was still grayish. This is rather insignificant in the use of offices is terribly annoying during gaming sessions or even during a night organized for watching movies.
While most of the most expensive gaming notebooks now use the new Intel Core i7, ASUS remains faithful to the old Core 2 architecture, at least in G72GX. Then, the CPU is used as a Core 2 Quad Q9000. This quad-core processor has 6 MB of L2 cache, 1066 MHz FSB and a clock frequency of 2.00 GHz Q9000 has a 45nm manufacturing process and requires a lot of energy because of a TDP of 45W. The Q9000 is supported by an opulence of 6144 MB RAM DDR2 800 MHz as the operating system Windows 7 are in Home Premium 64-bit version, then we can count the entire amount of memory. The hard drive capacity is widely available. There are already two Seagate 320 GB hard drives in G72GX.

The equipment is completed by the Nvidia GeForce GTX 260M, who works as a graphics card. The GeForce GTX 260M is equipped with a GB of VRAM GDDR3, 112 stream processors and Pure Video HD technology. This helps the CPU in the calculations for high-resolution video material. The GTX 260M graphics core implements a G92b (in fact the graphics card has no connection with the GTX 260 for desktops), supports DirectX 10.0 and it has a 55nm manufacturing process.
Due to the energy consumption of up to 75 watts, the GTX 260M can be used only on larger notebooks, or those with a good cooling system. The GeForce GTX 260M normally has a clock frequency of up to 550 MHz (core), 950 MHz (memory) and 1375 MHz (shader). Asus has reduced clock frequencies to 500 MHz (core), 800 MHz (memory) and 1250 MHz (shader). The reason for this, which explains the lack of a turbo mode, is probably already considerable in the working temperatures of components. In the benchmark graphs we will see what consequences this entails reduction of frequencies.
Let's start with benchmarks for CPU. The Intel Core 2 Quad Q9000 has achieved a good 2426 points in single core and an excellent 8699 points in the multiple cores in rendering Cinebench R10. Nevertheless, a Core i7-720QM (as used in Alienware m15x) exceeds the mode with 3388 points and 9959 points in single-core rendering multiple cores. Finally, the difference PCMark Vantage was lower with 5245 points (Q9000) against 5884 points (i7-720QM).

And now we move immediately to the benchmarks for the GPU. We will use to make a comparative GeForce GTX 260M is a high frequency (dell'Alienware m15x) and similar competitor ATI Radeon HD 4850 (the MSI GT725). Both the Radeon HD 4850 with 16,496 points, both the GTX 260M high frequencies with 16,611 points prove considerably faster than the GTX 260M at low frequencies used in G72GX with 12,669 points in 3DMark05.

The "Turbo Gear" makes available more energy saving strategies, interchangeable with the push of a button. This time Asus has implemented a turbo mode where you plan to overclock the CPU in G72GX.
An intelligent decision, taking into account the high temperatures reached during exercise (we'll talk again in the section on "Issues"). Support Express Gate can be considered as truly practical. By ExpressGate the user has access to several functions, such as email or instant messaging, all in the shortest time possible and without having to wait long to start the operating system.

Included accessories, a backpack and a mouse, will probably jump for joy the lucky buyer. The mouse is produced by the Razer Copperhead and responds to the name. It’s perfect as a gaming mouse because of its high accuracy and looks great with its blue light. The mouse is suitable for both left-and right-handed people due to its symmetrical form.
The backpack black G72GX (green / black for both the G60VX and G60J) is engaging with its black and gray accents and generally makes an excellent impression. The materials used seem to be of a quality (very) high and perfect workmanship is beyond dispute. In addition, the backpack has a large quantity of pockets and is well suited to the transport of other material besides the laptop.
Instead of accessories, the keyboard is certainly not a reason to cheer. The G72GX block has a separate numeric and most keys have a nice size, but the keyboard flexes considerably in some places and the pressure point of the keys is slightly inaccurate. Also the keys are very noisy during use, something that certainly not the impression of a high level. At least the keyboard layout again calm tempers. As usual, we can manage some practical functions through a combination of Fn + key. Among others we can control the volume and brightness, mute, disable the screen and the touchpad and manage multiple monitors and WLAN / Bluetooth.

Asus has made the size of the touchpad G72GX surprisingly large. Therefore, with high accuracy, is also exceptionally easy to deal with long distance with the mouse cursor. We did not find the knotty structure of the touchpad that Asus implements the smallest as the EEEPC 1005HA. Another problem during the game sessions may inadvertently move the mouse cursor or firing a shot because of very generous size of the touchpad. Speaking involuntary: the touchpad supports many combinations of gestures that are often launched accidentally. This applies especially to the scroll and zoom function.
The notebook we felt it was disappointing, pale and devoid of color, especially in comparison to notebook displays Alienware m15x and mySN XMG7.c tested recently. The intense criticism they receive great ideas that make G72GX practically unusable outdoors. It must take into account the positioning of the notebook also indoors to exclude troublesome reflections.

Currently there are several variants of G72GX, which differ only for the processor, the hard drive capacity and optical drive. The buyer finds the best price-performance ratio with G72GX-TY013V. For about 1400 euros have a Core 2 Duo P8700 (2.52 GHz), a 500-Gbyte hard drive and a "normal" DVD. The model-G72GX TY009V costs only 100 euros more. It has a Core 2 Duo T9600 (2.80 GHz), 640 GByte capacity divided into two 320 GB hard drive and optical drive BluRay. Alternatively you can buy G72GX-TY011V at a price almost identical that is something like 1500 euros (average in Austria). Features a Core 2 Quad Q9000 (2.00 GHz), two 500-Gbyte hard drive and even BluRay optical drive. The G72GX TY012V-1500-Euro and Euro G72GX-TY010V from 1600 are almost similar to TY009V but with a capacity of 1000 GB (split into two 500 GB hard drive). Our prototype G72GX-TY014V with a Core 2 Quad Q9000, two 320 GB hard drive and optical drive BluRay comes to cost around 1600 euros.

However, the stability of the shell of the screen is not the same level. As with all gaming notebook launched recently by Asus, the frame horizontal screen may have inflections as well as the body center of the display. Therefore we can find some image distortion. The bottom and top are considerably more stable. The case does not move even under a great pressure. Both hinges G72GX do their work smoothly and do not force the case to rotate. Other considerations: the G72GX has a considerable weight of 4050 grams and dimensions of approximately 410x300x51 (width x depth x height) and this is certainly not compact.

Asus is more than generous with interfaces. Only the back is properly engaged with the socket, VGA and HDMI output, an eSATA port Gigabit LAN RJ-45 and Kensington lock. On the left are two USB 2.0 ports and a Firewire (Hidden behind an elegant cover). Here we have a card reader 8-in-1 comprehensive SD, Mini SD, MMC, MS, MS Pro, MS Duo, MS Pro Duo and XD. The left is complemented by an optical BluRay. Second, on the right, we have a slot for ExpressCard 54mm dial and a Bluetooth / WLAN (Bluetooth 2.1 and WLAN a / b / g / n). Three audio sockets (headphones, line out, microphone / line input) and two additional USB 2.0 ports are hidden behind an additional coverage. So G72GX offers a total of four USB 2.0 ports.
The distribution of the interfaces has been well made by Asus. Since there are no other ports on the front half of sides, there are cables that could cause an obstruction. The most important interfaces (network port, plug the power and connections for the monitor) is at the back, this leaves the sides practically free. You use just the sides, perhaps to connect a mouse, earphones or external speakers.

The combination of two hard drives of 500 GB Seagate (Momentus ST9500420AS) is another significant feature of the handset. So the laptop has a capacity of 1 TB (terabytes) of high quality running at 7200rpm. When we executed the benchmark with HDTune we found that the disk can transfer data at up to 101 MB / sec and has an access speed of 17.2 milliseconds.

The second method to assess the potential of gaming G60J Asus has run the current 3D Mark Vantage benchmark. In this case, the PhysX has been disabled to allow you to compare the results with the systems from ATI, since this function can influence the results making them higher than they are. The G60J Asus scored 4900 points for positioning immediately after mySN XMG5 and being close to 5000 points behind the GT725 MSI (ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4850 / Intel P9500).
To see how well the handset performance with the programs, we ran the PC Mark Vantage benchmark, Futuremark, too. With a total score of 6199 points, the Asus G60J beats many gaming machines. In this case, the superiority of the Quad-Core CPUs becomes evident, especially in the new i7 chips. Only mySN XMG7.c, which mounts a CPU i7-820QM, beats the Asus G60J with a score of 6704 points. An exception to the above is the mySN QXG7 975 Desktop with Intel Core i7, which has similar performance. The M17x with the QX9300 CPU and graphics card 280M GTX SLI is hit with his 5422 points.
In SuperPi benchmark, which should detect the maximum clock speed of a single core CPU, we found that the Intel Turbo Boost widget can only reach a maximum clock frequency from 2.4 to 2.8 GHz when the Asus Turbo mode is disabled. However it appears to float a lot. With the turbo mode enabled ("Extreme Turbo), the maximum clock frequency is between the 2.67 and 2.8 GHz most of the time, however, remains on the CPU 2.67 GHz
Showing the hand wing performance increase thanks to the turbo is clear: 858 seconds and 822 seconds in the 32m test with turbo mode enabled. This shows that the turbo mode increases performance by at least 4%.

The producers of GTA IV have exploited all available resources for the latest chapter in the series. Upon release, only the most powerful laptop could run this game. Now, middle-class notebooks are affordable by aligning and are able to run this game at medium graphics.
A medium level of graphic detail, the benchmark integrated shows that the game can be run at a playable fps 40.62. If the graphic details are increased, the frame rate drops to 0-15 fps, a notable difference in performance.
"Risen" is a very popular role-playing game, so we decided to run the demo on the Asus G60J to see how he turned on the notebook. Unfortunately, the results are similar to those of GTA IV. A high level of graphic detail, the performances are unsatisfactory. Only after reducing the values of the graphics settings the performance rose to 30-45 fps, you need to make the game performance acceptable.

We were pleased with the good layout of keys when writing thanks to the short distance to clear the area of touch and pressure. As you type the key noise is not annoying.
Unfortunately, there is no right answer to the previous question. With less space to render the brightness of the screen occupies a region acceptable (with a maximum of 195 cd / m²).

However, the brightness distribution is not so good. In the top right down to the brightness of 155.5 cd / m², or you have lighting of 79.7% compared to 195 cd / m² maximum. After careful analysis, we concluded that the average illumination of the screen will be 173.6 cd / m², which pales compared to the original value and can at best be considered an acceptable value.
The screen is rarely used outside as the Asus G60J works best on the desk next to a wall outlet or outdoors.
No matter where you use your notebook, you have to get used to the narrow viewing angle stability. Even a slight variation on the vertical axis from the ideal position can result in annoying dark spots, or bright image. Horizontally at least the image is more stable, but angling the screen more than 30-40 ° we find ourselves with changes in color and strong reflections.
When we tested for the first time models fitted with the Intel Core i7, the tests had shown that these CPUs would be particularly suitable for machines for gaming. The new CPUs combine the advantage of a high clock speed with the option of multiple cores, to be precise, four cores for the current i7. Our relation to the new Intel chips has led us to conclude that the i7-720QM has the best price / performance ratio. Therefore it is not surprising that the first computer-based Core i7 use it as a CPU.

G60J The Asus is a computer-based Core i7 previously mentioned, which combines the power of the chip 720QM with Nvidia GeForce GTX 260M. This is a combination that guarantees good performance, even if not at the top. However, the price / performance ratio is very good so it's worth buying. The maximum price of 1700 euro is relatively small compared with the new Alienware m15x. The Asus G60J defends itself well against the alienware laptop for a much lower price. Sure, it lacks the aesthetic appeal of the Alienware models, which makes them so desirable, but has good performance.
What else has to offer G60J? The notebook is also equipped with four gigabytes of RAM DDR3 factory. Each bank of RAM has a memory of 2 GB and the two modules are divided into two pairs so as to be used in dual-channel mode so as to ensure a minimum performance more.
