With the Intel Atom Z520 and US15W chipset (codenamed Poulsbo) with integrated graphics GMA 500 can fully view, but at the expense of processing power. With an index of dissipating TDP of only 2 watts, the Atom Z520 far exceeds the Atom N270 and N280, widely used in current netbooks, which have a TDP of 2.5 Watts.

The combination of the Atom Z520 CPU and GMA 500 adapter should not be expected in large processing capacity. 1GB of RAM completes the endowment. As expected, the Asus Eee PC 1101HA has performance comparable to the Sony Vaio VGN P12Z maple and Aspire One 751, which we already reviewed, which have similar equipment.
For example, the 1101HA reaches 888 points in PCMark05, while the Vaio VGN P21Z and the Acer Aspire One 751 represent 916 (+3%) and 692 (-22%) respectively. Since we consider the value in 3DMark 3DMark03: here 1101HA gets 418 points, in line with 425 (+2%) of Sony VGN and 413 (-1%) Aspire points. In 3DMark05 we can observe similar results with 146 points eg, 1101HA, 126 (-14%) for the Sony Vaio VGN P12Z and 136 (-7%) for the Aspire One 751.
Netbook with more conventional combinations, such as Intel Atom N270 or N280 and a GMA 950 provides much better performance according to benchmarks. In comparison, the Asus Eee PC 1005HA (N270, GMA 950, 1GB RAM) is record 1617 points in PCMark05, 82% more of the 1101HA.
Nevertheless, office automation, navigation, Skype and so are easily within reach of the 1101HA, which manages them without difficulty.
The only storage device, as you might expect, is the hard drive, a Hitachi HTS543216L9SA00 that provides 160GB of space with a rotation speed of 5400 rpm, nothing sensational.
We tested the latency by using the DPC Latency Checker on Windows XP. With latencies important observable at times, there may be synchronization problems when you have external devices connected, for example using a sound card crackles outside. The right image illustrates the problems.

The Eee PC 1101HA is very quiet, reaching a maximum of 31.2dB (A) at idle or low loads. With heavier loads becomes relatively more noisy, with a peak of 37.2 dB (A). Overall it is a silent machine that produces a pleasant sound at low frequencies.
The machine warms up in a little noticeable, both in the area of the keyboard at the bottom. Even with intensive use, the upper reaches to the maximum 34.3 °, while the bottom is a bit 'cooler, with a maximum of 31.1 °. Working with the laptop on the legs raises particular concerns.
Asus promises up to 11 hours of battery life on your site. This is true for machines equipped with 6-cell battery with 63Wh lithium ion battery. Models with the version 48Wh, as the sample tested, provide up to 9.5 hours of use without charge.

Last year was presented the Eee PC 701 a 7-inch notebook with a Celeron M processor with a clock rate of 900 MHz and Xandros Linux operating system. After a while, was launched the Eee PC 901 with a screen 9 "and an Intel Atom, enough for the job. With the Asus Eee PC 1002HA, has once again closed the gap between the mini notebooks and small practical and subnotebooks.

Already at the opening of skatole will notice that the Asus Eee PC 1002HA is a high quality product. The Asian manufacturer uses a robust case made of aluminum with chrome accents around the screen and base unit for its latest notebook.
The other parts of this netbook are black plastic and made very clear, making the screen noble. The surface aluminum party supports for the wrists and cover are quite insensitive to dust and dirt such as fingerprints. But the frame of the display is because of glossy surface, very sensitive to dirt. If you often open and close, or adjust the angle, this part requires frequent cleaning.
We were very pleased with the stability of homes. This and the cover are very resistant to pressure. Although the cover has some failure, it is insignificant compared to other netbooks and notebooks.
The quality of this netbook is very good and leaves nothing to be desired. Even looking at the houses, we noticed edges or corner. Ultimately only the area between the keyboard and display can be criticized. Because an area of about one inch of plastic gives slightly under pressure at the center, and is not the same quality of aluminum parts.

Although the Asus Eee PC 1002HA is still small compared to the two hinges seem even smaller 10.2 inch screen. However, these work well and hold the display firmly in place. The oscillations are limited even when you lift the Asus Eee PC 1002HA and when the screen is fully open. With this small mini-notebook does not need complicated locking mechanisms.
Regarding connectivity, the Asus Eee PC 1002 HA is not as generous as multimedia notebooks. There are HDMI and eSATA. The 1002HA offers only standard ports like USB 2.0, VGA out, and audio ports for microphone and headphones.
Details in the front door and is not occupied by only two speakers. The right side offers a USB 2.0 interface followed by the audio ports, and headphone micro dose. The left side contains only two additional USB 2.0 ports. Finally the rear there is a 4in1 card reader, a VGA out, LAN port, power and a Kensington lock.

The index of performance of Windows Vista is very expressive, but the quote also. Has assigned 5.1 points to the CPU, RAM, 5 points, 5.9 points to the graphics, the graphics-oriented 5.5 points and 5.5 points per gaming hard drive. So a better CPU or faster RAM could greatly improve performance.

With the help of the DPC Latency Checker we went hunting for latencies under Windows. This is interesting when using external devices, such as an external sound card. From this point of view, no problem: the higher latencies were reached around 1000 microseconds.
We noticed two downsides that should be mentioned in the N51V. First, a large number of programs and unnecessary, installed by default causing a drastic drop in performance, especially during startup and immediately after. The system load varies between 0 and 100% for several minutes after startup, which can largely be resolved by uninstalling unnecessary tools.
During our tests, also the hard drive has given us an unfortunate moment of fear. Suddenly began to emit sounds quite strong after a system boot. At system start, after an eternity, the same was unusually slow. We restarted HDTune and here: the transfer rate ranged fearfully and access times were increased significantly compared with the first test (see screenshots). After a reboot the noises are gone, but the hard drive seemed back to normal. The emphasis, however, should be placed on "appeared" because the HDTune results were worse than before the accident. We could not determine the exact reason for the phenomenon.
There are dozens of versatile multimedia notebooks in the price range of around 800 € and many graphics cards have surprisingly efficient. To better assess the performance of the Geforce GT 130M we compared with the new GeForce 240M GT and Radeon HD 4650 the most widespread.
As one would expect, the older games are not a problem for the GT 130M. We ran the benchmarks with high detail and a resolution of 1024 x 768. CSS has allowed a stratospheric value of 207.3 fps while a HL 2, while excellent, 125.6 fps. The results were similar with the Geforce GT 204m.

Call of Juarez is another matter. The N51V limps with an average of 11.4 fps at 1024 x 768, 4xMSAA and high details, while a GT 240M ensured a refresh rate nearly triple with 35.6 fps. Also the HD 4650 has proven much faster with 33 fps.
Even the real-time strategy game World in Conflict has cornered the GT 130M. Details high, 2x AA 2x AF and a resolution of 1024 x 768 produced un'ingiocabile frequency of 15 fps. In his defense, we can say that the other competitors were put to the test. However, the HD 4650 made an even better figure in this case.

The screen used is glossy and is subject to unpleasant reflections already closed. There are high expectations, then use outdoors, with only the relatively high brightness keeps it usable. Moreover, the stability of the angle of view is anything but remarkable. Loss of color stands out quickly, especially vertically, as shown in the photos.

Asus chose the components for a balanced mix of mid-market products. The processor is a Core 2 Duo T6500 2.10 GHz, with well 2MByte of second-level cache and a 800 MHz FSB motherboard, Intel PM45 is equipped with four GB of RAM DDR-6400. The two slots for RAM are fully occupied by two banks of 2 GByte, reaching the maximum memory used. Of this, only 3 gig are available due to 32-bit operating system used (Windows Vista Home Premium).
Asus N51V equipped with the Nvidia GeForce 130M GT, with 32 processing units and a rich memory-1GByte DDR3 VRAM. 130M GT supports DirectX 10.0 and features PureVideo HD technology for decoding HD videos. The graphics card has an operating frequency of 600MHz core, 500Mhz memory to 1500Mhz and for shaders. In terms of performance is slightly faster than the older GeForce 9600M GT, in theory, but remains well below the new Geforce GT 240M and direct competitor, the Radeon HD 4650, used in most portable of the same price range .

Let's take a look at our benchmarks, starting with the CPU-oriented tests. The N51V reach a good score of 2249 in rendering single core and dual core testing in 4262 in Cinebench R10. In OpenGL benchmarks reached 3013 points. In comparison with a Core 2 Duo P7350 (2.00 GHz, 3MByte L2 cache, 1066MHz FSB) obtained slightly lower results (2141 points each, multicore: 4036 points). The N51V reach 5522 points in PCMark05, PCMark Vantage in 2970 points. The P7350 gets results respectively lower and higher with a similar configuration: 5377 points in PCMark 05 and 3440 points in PCMark Vantage.
Then proceed with the test-oriented GPU. The N51V get a good result of 9692 points in 3DMark05. In 3DMark06, there was a problem in the representation of scenes, which led to only 4716 points (CPU: 1879 points). The notebook has been so brutalized with 3DMark Vantage, which scored only 1595 points, where from 1326 to 4084 GPU and the CPU (without PhysX). A Geforce GT 240M, for example, has previously been tested on an Acer 5739G, the same price range, reached a much better result with 2348 points in 3DMark Vantage.

The N51V also has a 2 megapixel webcam and a microphone. The "Express Gate" is an integrated party. Pressing the button does not load Windows, but a mini-operating system that gives access to a bunch of features. Among them are a web browser, the ability to view photos and listen to music and there are a number of online games (on a specific online platform). Plus you can use Skype and other IM systems. The speed is pretty good and easy to use and immediate. Anyone wishing to quickly check email or look at vacation photos would be the right place.

The keyboard is arranged in a standard layout. The keys have acceptable dimensions, only the arrow keys and keypad buttons are a bit 'tighter than others. Ultimately, the keyboard is not impressed us all. As mentioned above, clearly yields in some places and the pressure point is imperceptible. The angularity of the keys is a bit annoying, and the clacking emitted by themselves not by a big idea of quality.
The touchpad, on the contrary, we liked. The surface is relatively smooth, with pleasing features of slipping. The touchpad has a scroll bar impressed. Does not work perfectly, because the scroll area is slightly off center from the guidelines, so many times scrolling is not executed. Moreover, the function has been calibrated in a rather strange and hardly possible to obtain a precise scrolling (even changing the driver settings).
The buttons work but instead perfectly, although with two minor flaws. First, the pressure point all too evident. Secondly, the noise resulting from the pressure is far too strong for our tastes. Asus has placed a bar on the touch-sensitive keyboard. This, along with the usual multimedia functions like volume control, it offers some of which worth mentioning.

The power saving mode can be set via "Power4Gear, which reacts differently than the settings of Vista, and should further reduce consumption. It 'can also set the yield on video modes such as "Vivid" or "theater" with "Splendid" and disable the touchpad. Finally we must mention the "Ionizer. According to Asus, the technology, rather unusual, should "create a work environment clean and fresh," clearing the air by bacteria and provide better circulation of the same. Subjectively, we have not noticed anything, but we think everyone should judge for themselves.
The thing that bothered us further is the ineffective response of the bar to press the keys. E 'need to press rather hard and long to have any effect. Also, once type of response is not unusual that the bar does not respond at all.

Asus offers its own range of portable versatile and economical series N51. The N51Vg, which features a Core 2 Duo and a relatively weak GeForce 105M G, can already be purchased from € 650. Following the N51Tp from € 700, equipped with an AMD Turion 64 ATI Radeon HD 4650 and efficient. Pe this review we chose the model N51Vf, about 750 €, which features a Core 2 Duo T6500 and a GeForce GT 130M.

The 15.6-inch case weighs 2960g and its dimensions are 369mm x 276mm x 43mm (width x depth x height). The design is very colorful. Support screen, sleek, comes in a mix of blue, black and gray, depending on the viewing angle. It looks like the raindrops, sliding along the glass of a window, leaving behind it a series of droplets. Unfortunately, the eyelid tends to get dirty a lot. The bevel of the screen and touch the bar are equally quick to capture fingerprints, being both ultra-polished. The upper shell is finished with a metallic gray-brown, giving an impression of great quality. Looking more closely, it becomes evident that a large part of plastic.
Speaking of design, the case is tapered towards the rear and an idea of roundness due to the soft curves. Cannot please everyone and we would have preferred a more clean and "edgy." Another thing that bothered us is the frame of the screen, relatively thick, especially vertically.
No criticism on the stability of homes. There has been little image distortion, even applying considerable pressure. The top surface and bottom have seemed equally strong, only the battery slot moves slightly to the touch. Instead the stability of the keyboard has been low. Already yields a minimum pressure and left bend down considerably in the keypad, as the DVD burner is located beneath it.
The massive hinges do their job so well, but sometimes attract attention with unpleasant crackles. The shell varies slightly open, despite the weight. We found the houses very pleasant, except for the low stability of keyboard design and a bit unusual.

The N51V has practically everything one could wish for multimedia spirit. A VGA port and a HDMI to connect external monitors followed, in turn followed by two USB 2.0 ports and a Firewire port. An opulent card reader 8-in-1, able to read SD, mini SD, MMC, MS, MS Pro, MS Duo and MS Pro Duo closes the row.
On the front edge there are only two audio jacks (headphone and microphone) and an eSATA port. Finally, find the right accommodation to the multiformat DVD burner, a third USB 2.0 port and a Kensington lock. No back door. The wireless link is provided by a card WLAN 802.11 a / b / g / n built.

The handset is suitable for indoor use only, or at least near the window, because the screen surface. In addition, the average brightness of 151 cd/m2 is very poor. The screen was very dark in the lower left, with only 109.2 cd/m2.
Illumination of 59% is far from homogeneous, and the contrast of 161:1 is sufficient, but not exciting. The colors are vivid, but a vibrant black is very far from what the screen Asus has to offer (it's a dark gray).

The lack of uniformity of illumination is particularly evident when, for example, you use a desktop background white. Here you can see a gray stripe down the left, while the white brighter than it has in the upper right. This is confirmed by measuring the maximum brightness of 184.6 cd/m2 top right. So those who wish to use the laptop outdoors, before buying, consider that the reflexes, coupled with low screen brightness, not a good match.
The horizontal viewing angle, however, is good and allows, for example, many people watch a movie together on the UX50V. Also vertically there is no problem: the image is also known for rather large angles, is an upwards or downwards.
The most interesting point for us was whether the Asus UX50V could have a good sense not only in appearance but, more importantly, for the services offered. The Intel Core 2 Solo U 3500 1.4 GHz content with just 5W, but offers a cache of level 2 and 3 generous 3MB in total and a faster 800MHz FSB.

However, not having a second processor cores, now supported by many applications, the CPU has some problem to handle multiple applications simultaneously (multitasking). For example, to watch a video in high definition and, meanwhile, quickly check something online, the video can be very fluid at times. The HD video mode energy savings are enough to put considerable strain on the processor.
The feelings are supported by test results: 1153 points in Cinebench and PCMark05 2497 points were not shocking. To compensate, Asus has a dedicated graphics card, a Geforce G105M with 512MB of video memory. The board falls under the third section of our guide comparative graphics cards and should therefore be sufficient for the games a bit older.
Anyone wishing to limit consumption will enable the integrated graphics chip, a GMA4500MHD, which requires much less energy (and less obviously offers 3D performance). We performed the benchmark with the following 3D graphics card.

The placement of audio jacks seem strange at first: the headphone cable should not bother, from the back of the notebook? Surprisingly, however, seems to work well with thin cables: thanks to the curved edges, cables can be routed around them under the edges (left or right depending on the position of the mouse. The headset comes with professional models with short cables or wires blocks, thicker, nevertheless remain a problem.

Since the grill is cooling on the back is not always possible to make sure that is not blocked by something. Even this does not seem an obvious choice. The battery, which is not visible from above or from the sides, covers an area much wider for a model with 4 cells and is located at the bottom. However, it is also unusually flat: only 7.5 mm.
Besides the 32-bit operating system, Windows Vista Home Premium, Asus preinstall its ExpressGate, which can be launched with a special key. This application offers features such as web browsing, picture viewing, media playback and Skype phones and DVDs, all without starting Windows.
Regarding Vista, to signal the presence of a coupon to upgrade to Windows 7, a recovery CD and a CD with drivers and various utilities are necessary. Asus has also provided a package containing several proprietary applications. Lifeframe with the integrated webcam can be used to record video or take pictures and you can change with different fun effects. The splash screen can be customized to your taste with Fancy Start, Data Security Manager protects valuable data and AI Recovery Burner allows you to create recovery CDs.
Since the speakers are certified SRS provides a program called SRS Premium Sound, which improves the sound settings. In addition to these suites is installed Cyberlink Power2Go, which contains the burning software and DVD player. Microsoft Office and Norton Internet Security (Trial) are also preinstalled.

Asus offers a chiclet keyboard with sticky keys and generous spaces to separate them, as in many other devices today. Even the keypad is now standard, and indeed we find the right buttons with just smaller than the rest of the keyboard.
The typing is very pleasant: the keys have a very long race, but are pleasantly quiet and give good feedback. Unfortunate, however, the fact that the keyboard flex is already moderate pressures.
The light from the keyboard, which is white like the status LEDs and power button, it is worthy of note. Allows you to work smoothly in adverse lighting conditions and can be adjusted in various ways, as well as off, with a keystroke. Alternatively you can activate the light sensor with the combination Fn + A "resides next to the keyboard and automatically adjusts screen brightness and keyboard according to ambient lighting conditions.
The touchpad, like the surrounding area, has gloss: very attractive, but equally susceptible to dirt. Apart from that the flow characteristics of the area are far from good: literally stick their fingers to the touchpad in some parts. The touchpad does not support the commands "gesture". However, it implemented a scrolling but, not being shown in any way, sometimes inadvertently activated. At least the touchpad is clearly separated from the rest of the area both visually and by a small board.

The problem is known since the electronics industry has replaced the opaque plastic of the 90 with gloss lacquered surfaces of the new century a few years ago. Smooth surfaces, especially the touch pad and palm rest area of the UX50V, proved attractive to look at, but extremely sensitive and dirtiness.

After 10 minutes of use, the surfaces showed numerous signs, footprints and a fair amount of dust. The sample under test, it had to be passed by hands not quite careful: we noticed scratches on the chrome and touch pad on the frame of the screen.
In any case, Asus has not ignored the issue, providing a microfiber cloth and a guide to cleaning, to help keep it free of fingerprints.
Lacquered or not, all components are securely fastened to the case. No noise or rattle when handling the laptop, although the keyboard flexes considerably close to the submit button and the screen can be slightly bent. To do so, however, we must apply a firm pressure on both sides, which hardly occurs in everyday use.
The two narrow hinges not prevent wobble of the screen completely, but it is very stable overall. The screen will automatically close to 10 cm. There is no firm: to halt the eyelid think only the hinges. The handset can be opened with one hand, thanks to the weight of the base.

The hinges prevent opening more than 45 ° from vertical. Care must be taken when the screen is tilted toward us already to 40 ° off the screen, activating the functions provided by "closing monitor" in power management settings (standby default).
The status LED, power button and the keyboard light up white light when the device is switched on. The innovation fits well in the context of the proposed design, and is welcome compared to the "persistent blue" of other manufacturers. By the way, the LED underneath the power button is very bright and, being located immediately below the display may confuse a user at a disadvantage. Asus has gathered, quite unusual, almost all connections on the back of the case. On the right is just a DVD burner with LightScribe media.
On the left, hidden behind a small door are two connections: a card reader 8-in-1 (supports SD, MMC, Mini SD, XD, Memory Stick, MS Pro, MS Duo and MS Pro Duo) and a door USB 2.0. Alongside these there is a silver switch to toggle WLAN and Bluetooth.
On the back, from right to left, are: the grid of cooling, power supply jack, a LAN port, a VGA connector, an HDMI port, two USB 2.0 ports and two 3.5mm audio jacks (headphone and microphone).
Asus Laptop Goes Into Standby Mode Randomly

Asus overflows into low-end multimedia notebook with lacquer, winding design and a dual graphics solution.. Or not? The 15.6-inch notebook UX50V is a portable office to look nice, but hardly suitable for use with multimedia components due to weak? We have unleashed the original in our possession on our path of testing and evaluation without being dazzled by her striking appearance.

Admittedly, the Asus engineers have really good taste: the UX50V is really nice to see. But the content matters, and the sample being tested is equipped with an Intel Core 2 Solo U3500 at 1.44 GHz with low power consumption and a dedicated graphics card NVidia Geforce G105M with 512 MB of RAM. The graphics card may be replaced with the push of a button, the Intel GMA 4500M HD integrated to limit consumption.
We found no information about the German site of Asus, even if the notebook is already available in the country for a couple of dealers. The producer offers five different models in Europe, which differ mainly for the processor used. Our configuration with a Core 2 Solo U3500 should be a middle ground between the available options.
Upstairs there are two performance models, respectively, a Core 2 Duo SU 9400 SU9600 1.4 GHz and a 1.6 GHz, available in the UK. Both models have two processing cores.
On the low end, however, we find a Core 2 Solo 1.2 GHz SU 3300 and SU 2700 to a Pentium 1.3 GHz Because of the problems that our sample has shown with Windows Vista and other applications we are open to advise them in advance to single-core models.
The model tested is available online from 850 €. According to Asus there are no more of the UX50V stands for the German market. Of course, we will notify you if things change.

The design is kept to the smallest detail. The case of UX50V impression of stability and well executed. Most components are made of high quality plastic, with the exception of the speakers in metal. The case has a width of 385mm, depth 257mm, height ranging from 29 to 33 mm and a weight of 2,630 grams. The power supply with a maximum consumption of 65W, weighs 290 grams.
As anticipated, Asus has done a great job on the side of aesthetic eyelid in black shiny silver Asus imprinted with a symbol that glows when you open the box.
Under the sloping front edge are metal grids that occupy the full width and hides the speakers. The silver buttons to eject the DVD and to activate the WLAN are located, respectively, right and left of the houses. The sides of the hinges, which extend forward with an elegant curve, are also silver.
Opening the notebook we are welcomed by many reflections: Asus has chosen again shiny surfaces. The screen is fused in frame and even the wrist-rest area is clear. Only the bottom surface and the keyboard were spared and manufactured in opaque plastic. The plastic above the keyboard is slightly structured towards the screen.
