ASUS UX50V - the 15.6 inch mirror with brain
The portable computers with fashion accents are lately more and more promoted. We did not study the market request, but ASUS seems to know very well how requested is a shiny laptop, with Swarovski crystals or other finery. Yet, with the ASUS UX50V model, the Taiwan manufacturer has gone too far. Although it does not present precious elements, this 15.6 inch notebook has a boomerang effect endowment - exaggerated gloss of the case and display.
If on the case I didn't find anything to unsatisfying me (excepting the part where it is filled with fingerprints), with the display the things are a little different: I could not get used to be an actor in the main role, in any activity ran on the computer. To be clearer, the screen is a real mirror. Either you look at a movie, write poetry or surf the internet, your expressionless face will follow you like your own shadow. Only the ladies who spend hours in front of the mirror and exercise on charisma improvements (or just simply have a high dose of narcissism and adore to look at themselves) will probably be enchanted because in this way they will earn time. The rest of us, certainly not.

Too bad for the good design of this notebook. UX50V is solid, well proportioned, and the keyboard and touchpad are among the finest. The keyboard is excellent spaced and illuminated with LEDs, and the pad is very responsive and precise. The inconvenient is from placing the USB and audio ports in the back. There is a single USB port placed on the left side, but even this one is covered by a small plastic "door". Also there is found the SD card slot. Also, you are having problems reaching to the WiFi switch, especially because of the bad positioning (also in the area of the side USB, but somewhere close to the base of the case).
A last problem which we remarked is one which I never met on any computer, either notebook or desktop: the power button. I was amazed when I tried to power up the laptop and ... nothing. Until I realized that this button is very pretentious - you have to push it some way with your finger nail if you want to be sure it will boot from the first attempt. In conclusion, we have enough bad points at the design chapter. Until we talk about performances, you must seriously think if the design based on your own image represents you.

Specifications
- Intel Core 2 Solo 1.4 GHz processor
- 4 GB of DDR2 RAM memory
- 15.6 inch LCD monitor with LED backlight 1366 x 768
- NVIDIA GeForce G105M / Intel GMA 4500HD graphics cards
- 320 GB 5400 rpm, SATA II Hitachi hard drive

- Windows Vista Ultimate edition operating system
- 1.3 mega pixel web camera
- Altec Lansing speakers

Although ASUS UX50V is part of the Superior Mobility category, the tests proved that the Taiwan notebook is a medium value piece, no way a tower or a queen.
In order for you to understand better, its performances are a little better than a netbook's. ASUS UX50V has a complex software Power 4 Gear which allows selecting from three working modes, depending on how hard you wish to run or how much you want to save power.
